Preparing Your Child for a Successful School Year

Parenting & Home Support · 5 min read · By Etihad Islamic Primary School

The start of a new school year brings excitement, but also a certain amount of upheaval — new routines, new expectations, sometimes a new class teacher. A little preparation in the days before term begins can make that transition considerably smoother.

Rebuild the Routine Early

If bedtimes and wake-up times have drifted during a holiday, it helps to gradually shift them back towards the school schedule a few days before term starts, rather than making an abrupt change on the first morning. A well-rested child settles into new routines far more easily.

Sort Out the Practical Essentials

Checking uniforms fit, gathering the required books and supplies, and confirming any documents needed by the school office ahead of time removes a common source of first-week stress for both parent and child.

Talk About the Year Ahead

A short, positive conversation about what to expect — a new class, new subjects, perhaps a new teacher — helps a child feel prepared rather than anxious. Asking what they are looking forward to, and what feels uncertain, gives a parent useful insight into how the child is feeling.

Reconnect With Learning Habits

If reading or practice habits slipped during the break, easing back into them a week or two before school starts — even briefly — helps a child re-enter the classroom with less of an adjustment period.

Set Realistic Expectations

The first few weeks of a new term are rarely perfectly smooth. Minor forgetfulness, tiredness, or reluctance in the mornings are common and usually settle within a few weeks. Patience during this period, rather than frustration, helps children adjust with confidence.

At Etihad Islamic Primary School, we believe a good start to the term sets the tone for everything that follows, and we're glad to support families as they prepare.
