How Parents Can Support Their Child's Learning at Home

Parenting & Home Support · 5 min read · By Etihad Islamic Primary School

Many parents worry that supporting a child's education at home means hiring a tutor or spending hours over homework every evening. In reality, some of the most effective support comes from small, consistent habits that fit into ordinary family life.

Create a Predictable Routine

Children tend to do better with structure. A simple, repeated routine — a set time for homework, a quiet space to work, a consistent bedtime — removes a lot of the daily negotiation and helps a child know what is expected of them without being told every single day.

Show Interest, Not Just Supervision

Asking to see a completed exercise book, or asking a child to explain what they learned that day in their own words, does more than checking whether homework is finished. It signals that learning matters to you, and it often reveals what a child has genuinely understood versus what they have simply copied down.

Keep Corrections Encouraging

When a child makes a mistake, the way a parent responds matters. Pointing out an error calmly, and asking the child to try again, builds resilience. Reacting with frustration, even unintentionally, can make a child anxious about getting things wrong — which often makes learning harder, not easier.

Use Everyday Moments

Learning does not need to be confined to homework time. Counting change at a shop, reading signs together, or discussing a story from the news are all small opportunities to reinforce numeracy, literacy and general knowledge in a natural way.

Stay Connected to the Classroom

Parents who occasionally check in with a class teacher — even briefly — tend to have a clearer picture of where their child is doing well and where they need more support. This makes it easier to focus home support where it is actually needed, rather than guessing.

At Etihad Islamic Primary School, we consider parents true partners in this journey, and we welcome the conversations that help us support your child both in and out of the classroom.
