How Schools and Parents Can Work Together for Better Results

School & Community · 5 min read · By Etihad Islamic Primary School

A school can provide excellent teaching, and a family can provide a loving, supportive home — but children tend to do best when these two environments work together rather than operating separately. A genuine partnership between school and home is one of the most underrated ingredients in a child's education.

Communication Should Flow Both Ways

A strong partnership depends on parents feeling comfortable raising questions or concerns with teachers, and teachers feeling able to share both praise and concerns with parents promptly, rather than waiting until a problem has grown. Regular, honest communication in both directions builds trust over time.

Attend What You Can

Parents' meetings, consultation days, and school events are not simply formalities — they are opportunities to understand how a child is actually doing, beyond what appears in a report card. Even attending occasionally sends a message to a child that their education matters to their family.

Reinforce, Don't Contradict

When home and school reinforce the same expectations around behaviour, effort and respect, children experience far less confusion. Undermining a teacher's decision in front of a child, even unintentionally, can make it harder for that child to take school rules seriously.

Share Context That Helps

Parents often have insight a teacher cannot see — a difficult week at home, a health concern, a change in the family. Sharing relevant context, briefly and privately, helps teachers respond to a child with the right understanding rather than assuming the worst.

Celebrate Progress Together

Recognising a child's improvement — however small — both at home and at school reinforces effort and keeps children motivated. A partnership works best when it celebrates growth, not just corrects mistakes.

At Etihad Islamic Primary School, we treat every parent conversation, whether at the school gate or in a scheduled meeting, as a chance to strengthen this partnership.
